After reading 'Seah Eu Chin: The King of Gambier and Pepper', I decided to borrow another book from the series, "Our Amazing Pioneers".

I vividly remember learning about Naraina Pillai as the builder of Sri Mariamman Temple. But that was all that I knew about him. Surely, he wouldn't have been such an important historical figure for merely building a temple? And this question propelled me to read Naraina Pillai's story out of all other books that were available in the series (just a personal preference).
After reading the first few pages of the book, a distinct feature that I noticed from the series is that it introduces the background story of where the protagonist lived before coming to Singapore. It aids readers to have a better understanding of the protagonist's actions and motivations.
"In 1819, when Pillai was younger, he had sailed from Penang to Singapore on board the same ship as Sir Stamford Raffles, seeking fame and fortune."
Pillai's journey to earning his fame and fortune was not easy. The cotton bazaar that he initially owned was completely ruined by the fire. However, he did not give in to the unfortunate circumstances and continued to work towards the goal he had in mind when migrating to Singapore. He took up the job to check for counterfeit coins, persevering to earn his fortune regardless of hurdles. A realistic portrayal of the ups and downs that Naraina Pillai faced and his nonlinear journey to success would definitely empower readers to trudge through their obstacles.
"At that time, he observed that many people were arriving in Singapore every day. He thought to himself, surely, they need houses to live in."
Pillai was naturally observant and perceived the increased demand for housing as a business opportunity. The entrepreneurial mindset that he displayed would definitely be inspirational for young readers to start their own businesses when they grow up.
"Pillai never forgot the kindness he had received. He wanted to give back to society. He saw that there were many Indian migrants who needed a helping hand."
I really liked how the book inculcates its readers with the responsibility of giving back to the society. It is crucial that the current generation of Singaporeans make efforts to develop Singapore for future generations to enjoy the fruition of our actions.
Another feature that I liked about the book is the tidbits of factual information and/or definitions written in some pages of the book. Apart from narrating a story with exemplary moral values, the book also has educational content to improve the knowledge of its young readers.
Overall, this book has deepened my appreciation for Naraina Pillai and his countless contributions to Singapore. The writer's engaging narration style and the illustrator's vibrant illustrations would undoubtedly capture the attention of any child. It is a valuable read that builds on the historical knowledge of its readers, and I highly recommend this for children.
